Building Code Requirements & Permits

Most new construction projects require a Building Permit from the municipality, including, but not limited to, new structures, renovations, alterations, and most accessory structures. Separate Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC Permits are typically required as part of a Building Permit Application package as well, depending on the scope of the project.

Building Permit applications require detailed and specific information regarding the existing and new construction and utilities, including type of frame (wood, masonry, etc.), type of sewer system, type of water supply, type of heating, etc.; size and area of new and existing spaces. Depending on the size and scope of the project, Architectural Design & Engineering and Structural Design & Engineering plans also may be required as part of the Building Permit Application.

All new construction and renovation projects are required to meet Building Code regulations. Each state and municipality has their own Building Code, but all are amended versions of the most-current International Building Codes. The current state building codes can be reviewed online through UpCodes, including the Building and Residential Codes, the Fire Code, Plumbing Code, Mechanical Code, Fuel Gas Code, and more.
